Has anyone noticed the hiring freeze signs?

I’ve been at 3M for a few years now, and the atmosphere in my department has shifted significantly over the last month. We usually have a steady stream of backfills or new roles opening up in the org charts, but everything has gone stone-cold silent. I’m starting to see people scrubbing their LinkedIn profiles and updating their resumes during lunch hours, which is always the canary in the coal mine. There’s a lot of chatter about 'operational efficiency' during the recent town halls, which we all know is just corporate speak for trimming the fat. Has anyone heard anything specific from their directors about Q3 or Q4 targets? I’m trying to figure out if I should stick it out or start testing the waters elsewhere before the job market gets even tighter. It feels like we are just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I’ve been tracking the internal job portal for weeks, and you’re spot on. The usual churn has completely evaporated. Management loves throwing around buzzwords like 'synergy' and 'streamlining' right before they hand out the pink slips, and the silence from leadership is deafening. If people are already scrubbing their profiles, they’ve likely heard things the rest of us haven’t yet. It feels like the calm before the storm, and I’m definitely tightening my own belt until we see what the Q3 numbers actually look like.

Same here. The 'operational efficiency' talk is just corporate-speak for 'we’re slashing the headcount to make the balance sheet look pretty for shareholders.' It’s frustrating because we’re still being pushed for the same output with fewer resources, but the hiring freeze makes it clear where this is heading. Don't wait for a formal announcement to start networking. If you’re seeing the LinkedIn activity spike, your gut instinct is probably right—start getting your portfolio ready just in case.
