Mandatory 'efficiency' workshops are getting intense. What's the endgame?

So, my division just got hit with a mandatory company-wide 'efficiency and optimization' workshop series. It feels less like helpful training and more like they're trying to justify headcount reductions. We're spending hours analyzing workflows, identifying 'redundancies', and basically documenting our own jobs in excruciating detail. The facilitators are super corporate-speak heavy, talking about 'synergies' and 'streamlining operations'. Honestly, it's making everyone pretty nervous. Feels like a lot of smoke and mirrors, and I'm wondering if anyone else is going through this and what you think it actually means.

This sounds really familiar. We went through something similar last year. The 'efficiency' drive felt like a thinly veiled prelude to layoffs. They asked us to map every single task, which, of course, highlighted how much we actually do. A few months later, there were 'restructuring' announcements. Keep your resume updated, just in case.**

I hear you. 'Synergies' and 'optimization' are code words for 'cut costs'. It's a classic management tactic to make employees feel like cogs in a machine that can be easily replaced. Focus on documenting your contributions clearly, but don't let the process drain your actual productivity. Sometimes these initiatives fizzle out, but it's always wise to be prepared.**
