Performance review cycle seems… different this year

So, the annual performance review cycle is kicking off, and it just feels off. Usually, there's a bit of a dance, setting goals, getting feedback. This year, it feels like they're being *extra* cautious with ratings and comments. My manager was cagey when I asked about potential areas for development, almost like they didn't want to put anything in writing that could be misconstrued later. And the emphasis on 'meeting expectations' vs. 'exceeding expectations' feels amplified. It's all very corporate-speak, but the underlying vibe is definitely one of caution. Anyone else getting the same impression? Feels like they're laying the groundwork for something, and it's not necessarily positive for the high performers.

I'm feeling it too. It's like there's a general cloud of 'don't rock the boat' over everything lately. My manager was the same way, super vague and almost afraid to commit to any specific feedback, even positive stuff. I wonder if it's a company-wide directive or just a few managers being extra cautious. Definitely makes it hard to know where you actually stand or how to improve. Feels like we're being managed by a risk assessment team instead of actual people.

Sounds like standard corporate CYA to me. They're probably bracing for layoffs or restructuring and don't want anything in writing that could be used against them later, either for or against an employee. The 'meeting expectations' language is a classic way to keep everyone at baseline without giving raises or promotions. Just keep your head down, do your job, and document everything you do. It's not personal, it's just business.
