Quiet 'optimization' talk – anyone else hearing this?

Been at 3M for a few years now, and lately, the language from management has shifted. It's always 'optimization' this, 'streamlining' that. Used to be about growth and innovation, now it feels like we're just constantly being told to find ways to cut costs or do things 'more efficiently.' My manager's been talking a lot about 'headcount rationalization' in a way that makes me uneasy, not like a standard budget review. We're also seeing project timelines getting squeezed, and some smaller initiatives just… disappearing without much explanation. It feels like there's a lot of behind-the-scenes shuffling going on, but nothing concrete is being said. Just wondering if anyone else is picking up on this vibe and if it’s leading to anything concrete down the line? Feels like a lot of smoke without a fire yet, but the smoke is getting thicker.

I've been hearing the same whispers. It feels like the company culture is slowly changing from one focused on bold new ideas to one where simply shaving a few pennies off every corner is the main priority. The 'optimization' buzzword is definitely a red flag for potential layoffs or reorgs down the line. It's a shame, because I genuinely believed in 3M's innovative spirit not too long ago. Now, it's hard to shake the feeling that something significant is brewing behind the scenes, and it might not be for the better for many employees.

Yeah, the 'optimization' talk has been pretty prevalent. It's a bit unsettling when the focus shifts so heavily to cost-cutting and 'efficiency' rather than expanding or developing new products. 'Headcount rationalization' sounds particularly ominous. It makes you wonder if they're preparing for a larger restructuring or if this is just the new normal for how they communicate internally. Hoping it's just a phase and not a sign of deeper issues.
