Is 84 Lumber actually safe or just quiet?

It’s been eerily quiet on the internal front lately. Usually, there’s a ton of noise about expansion and hitting numbers, but everything feels like it’s being run through a filter right now. I’ve seen a couple of people on LinkedIn from the corporate side update their profiles to 'Open to Work' recently, which is always a red flag to me. I’m not saying there’s an official RIF announcement, but usually, when the hiring freeze hits this hard and the communication stops being transparent, the writing is on the wall. I’m currently looking at my options because I don't want to be the last one left trying to turn off the lights. Has anyone actually heard anything concrete, or is this just standard cyclical tightening? I’ve survived past cuts, but the atmosphere right now feels different—like they’re preparing for a much bigger correction. Don’t trust the 'everything is fine' emails. If you’re seeing budget freezes, start updating your resume now. Better to be prepared and stay than to get caught off guard.

That quiet isn't accidental, it's deliberate. When leadership stops talking about the future and stops pushing for growth, you should be paying attention to the silence. Seeing corporate staff updating their statuses is the ultimate canary in the coal mine. Don't wait for an official email to start polishing your resume; if you see the signs, start looking elsewhere immediately because they rarely telegraph a restructure until it's already in motion. Protect yourself now before the internal landscape shifts for good.

I’ve been tracking these same patterns and it feels like the calm before a massive storm. The culture there is usually high-energy and loud, so this pivot to total silence is definitely jarring. A hiring freeze paired with talent quietly exiting through the back door is rarely a good sign for stability. It’s tough to speculate, but you aren't imagining things—the lack of transparency is usually a defensive mechanism used when they're preparing for bad news. Keep your head down, finish your projects, and keep your options open.
