Anyone else seeing pressure to increase billable hours?

Lately, it feels like the utilization targets are becoming almost impossible to hit. My manager keeps talking about 'maximizing client value' and 'ensuring every hour is accounted for.' I get that we need to be productive, but it's starting to feel like we're expected to be on client calls or working on billable tasks 100% of the time, with zero room for professional development, internal initiatives, or even just catching your breath. I've seen a few people on my team struggling to meet their goals, and the conversations around it are getting more intense. It's not outright threats, but the implication is clear: fall behind, and you might be seen as expendable. Just wondering if this is a company-wide push or if it's specific to my practice area.

Yeah, the utilization talk is definitely picking up steam. It feels like the definition of 'billable' is getting stretched thinner and thinner, and any time not directly invoicing a client feels like a mark against you. Management's language about 'maximizing value' seems to be a thinly veiled way of saying 'bill more.' It's creating a lot of unnecessary stress and making it hard to focus on the quality of the work when the sole focus is quantity of hours. Wondering how sustainable this is long-term.

Totally feel this. The pressure to be constantly 'on' and billable is intense. It leaves very little room for the actual thinking, collaboration, and learning that makes us good at our jobs in the first place. It’s ironic, isn't it? They want us to deliver innovative solutions for clients, but don't provide the space to innovate or even just recharge. This constant grind is bound to lead to burnout for many.
