My manager has been doing the exact same thing lately. Started out vaguely asking about market trends, but now it's definitely more personal. I think it might be a broader company initiative to gauge retention or even identify potential 'flight risks' before they even start looking. I'm not sure if it's meant to be helpful or just a subtle nudge. Best advice? Be honest but strategic about your answers. If you're happy, say so, but maybe don't give away too many details about specific companies you're interested in unless you're truly ready to jump.
That's a bit odd, for sure. 'Aligning with market needs' sounds like corporate speak for something else. Is it possible your manager is trying to understand where your skills fit in the current landscape, maybe to reposition you on projects or suggest training? Or, and this is a cynical take, they might be looking to see if you're already looking elsewhere so they can start the process of replacing you. Have you asked them directly what they mean by it? Might be worth a straightforward, non-confrontational conversation.
