Pipeline is drying up, are the Q4 numbers real?

Is anyone else feeling the pressure on the bench right now? I’ve been hearing whispers that the 71 roles cut in Morristown are just the tip of the iceberg for the upcoming quarter. Leadership keeps talking about 'optimizing the pyramid,' but let’s be honest—it feels like a desperate attempt to massage the margins before the fiscal year wraps up. I’ve been trying to roll onto a new project for six weeks, and every interview ends with the same vague answer: 'we’re waiting on client budget approval.' We all know what that actually means. Are people actually getting staffed, or are we all just waiting for the inevitable invite to a meeting that could have been an email? I’m exhausted by the constant pivot toward 'efficiency' while my utilization rate tanks through no fault of my own. If I don't see a project hit my dashboard by mid-September, I’m startng to look elsewhere. The consulting life was already stressful, but this constant anxiety about who’s next is killing the culture entirely.

The 'optimizing the pyramid' excuse is classic corporate speak for gutting the middle to cover up poor revenue forecasting. I have been on the bench for two months now, and the lack of transparency is reaching a breaking point. When projects are consistently 'stalled by budget approval,' it usually means the pipeline has already evaporated and leadership is just stalling to keep the stock price from tanking before the final reports. Don't buy into the internal messaging; start updating your resume quietly.

Honestly, the sentiment across the firm feels pretty grim right now. I’ve noticed the same pattern with client budget delays, and it’s become the standard excuse for when the work simply isn't there anymore. It’s transparent that they are trying to strip costs to hit those Q4 targets at any expense. If you are sitting on the bench for more than a month, treat it as a warning sign. The people at the top are clearly bracing for a rough transition into the new fiscal year.
