Project staffing feels like musical chairs – who's next to lose a seat?

Seriously, the way projects are being staffed lately is bizarre. People are getting pulled off some projects with vague 're-skilling' or 'strategic alignment' reasons, only to sit on the bench for a few weeks before landing somewhere else, often at a lower pay grade or with a less desirable client. Then, other projects are suddenly desperate for bodies, pulling people from existing commitments. It feels chaotic and like they're trying to shuffle people around to balance utilization numbers without actually cutting anyone... yet. But it also feels unsustainable. The constant reshuffling and the uncertainty are creating a lot of anxiety. People are asking each other, 'When it's my turn to get moved, will I even land anywhere good?' The grapevine is buzzing with speculation, but no one has concrete answers, just a lot of nervous energy.

Totally relate to the musical chairs vibe. It feels like the focus is entirely on utilization spreadsheets rather than actual project needs or employee development. The constant reshuffling makes it impossible to build any real momentum or expertise on a given engagement. Plus, the uncertainty is draining; you never know when you'll be the one getting up from your seat.

This is spot on. The 'strategic alignment' justification for moves is often a thinly veiled excuse for resource balancing. It's frustrating to see good people benched or moved into less impactful roles just to hit a utilization target. Seems like a lot of churn with little long-term benefit for either the employees or the clients.
