Struggling to find a new charge code after Morristown reductions

Following the news of the 71 layoffs in Morristown, the atmosphere here is incredibly tense. I’ve been sitting on the bench for three weeks now, and every time I ping my resource manager, I get the same vague 'we are looking into internal opportunities' reply. It feels like the goalposts are moving every single day. I’ve been with the firm for three years, and I’ve never seen the internal job board look this barren. Are we actually winning any new business, or are we just trying to keep the lights on until the next fiscal cycle? I’m genuinely concerned that being on the bench right now is a death sentence. Anyone else feeling the pressure to leave on their own terms before the next round of WARN notices hits? I’d rather jump ship to a boutique firm than wait for an HR invite to a 'brief meeting' that ends with a laptop drop-off.

The bench is an absolute nightmare right now. I’ve been hearing the exact same excuses from leadership for months, and it’s become painfully obvious that there’s very little work coming through the pipeline. When they stop being transparent about the project acquisition status, it’s usually a sign that they’re just waiting for the next round of attrition to hit. Start polishing your resume and looking outside the firm because waiting on a resource manager to 'find' you a role that doesn't exist is a waste of your time. Don't fall for the loyalty trap when your tenure doesn't protect you from these constant cycles.

Hang in there. It’s definitely a rough patch, but these fluctuations in project availability are unfortunately part of the business model. Sometimes the internal portal lags behind actual demand, so try reaching out directly to MDs or senior managers in your specific practice area rather than just relying on the resource management portal. Networking is often the only way to get a lead when the boards look dry. I know the atmosphere feels heavy, but keep your head down and stay proactive with your personal network—something eventually opens up if you push enough.
