Anyone else noticing the hiring freeze becoming permanent?

So, for the past quarter, we've had this 'hiring pause' for my department. It was framed as a temporary measure, something to 'realign priorities' or 'optimize resource allocation.' Standard corporate speak, you know the drill. But it's been months now, and every time someone asks about roles being backfilled or new positions being opened, the answer is always 'still under review' or 'we're waiting for the next budget cycle.' It feels less like a pause and more like the doors have been quietly shut. My manager is giving vague answers, and even skip-level seems to be avoiding the topic. Feels like a strong indicator that they're conserving cash, which usually precedes something unpleasant. Anyone else seeing this across the company?

Yeah, I'm seeing similar vibes across a few teams here. The 'pause' has definitely stretched out longer than anyone anticipated. It's frustrating because it creates this vacuum where existing teams are overloaded, and new talent can't come in to share the load or bring fresh perspectives. The 'waiting for budget' excuse feels like a classic way to delay indefinitely without a definitive 'no'. Keep your eyes open for external opportunities, just in case.

Honestly, a 'hiring freeze' that lasts this long is usually code for 'we're cutting headcount' or at least significantly restructuring how things are done. It's a tough situation, but sometimes these periods are followed by a round of layoffs or a shift in strategic direction. I'd start updating your resume and networking. It's always better to be prepared than caught off guard.
