It’s definitely the standard corporate playbook. Whenever leadership starts pushing for a full-time return-to-office mandate, it’s rarely about 'collaboration' or company culture. They know exactly how many people will refuse to commute or quit because of the lack of flexibility, which allows them to hit their headcount reduction targets without the bad press of a massive, publicized layoff. It’s a quiet way to thin the ranks, and seeing middle management drop off is a major red flag that the budget cuts are already underway. Watch your back.
I’ve been at Aflac for a while now, and the atmosphere lately is just heavy. Everyone is walking on eggshells waiting for the other shoe to drop. The RTO stuff just feels like an excuse to manufacture attrition. If they wanted us back for productivity, they would have done it months ago, but doing it right before the end of the fiscal year makes the motive pretty obvious. Don’t wait for an invite to a meeting with HR to update your resume; if you see the writing on the wall, start looking elsewhere now.
