Culture shift at Aflac: feels like we are just numbers now

It wasn’t always like this. A few years ago, there was at least a facade of caring about the employees and the long-term staff. Now, it feels like the current leadership is just looking for any excuse to trim headcount to appease the street. The recent layoffs in Nashville and Shelby are just the latest signal that no one is safe, regardless of tenure or performance. I’ve been here over five years and I’ve never seen morale this low. They keep pushing these 'innovation' initiatives while cutting the very people who have the institutional knowledge to execute them. It’s a complete disconnect. If you’re looking at this place from the outside, keep looking. They promise stability, but the reality is constant anxiety and shifting goalposts. I’m polishing my resume tonight—I’d rather jump ship now than wait for the next round of 'operational efficiencies' to knock on my door.

I honestly feel the exact same way. It used to be a place where you felt like part of a family, or at least a team, but that's completely evaporated. Every time leadership rolls out a new 'strategic vision' or 'innovation' buzzword, we all know it’s just a preamble to another round of cuts. It’s impossible to stay motivated when you’re constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if your department is next on the chopping block. The trust is gone, and unfortunately, I think the best talent is already looking for the exits.

You aren't imagining it. I’ve been watching the same patterns unfold from my corner of the office, and it’s clear that headcount reduction has become the primary metric for success in the eyes of the board. They’ve traded our stability and institutional knowledge for short-term stock price optics. It’s a shame because Aflac really did have a unique identity at one point, but now it’s just another corporate machine churning through people. Hang in there, but definitely keep your options open, because the trend isn't reversing anytime soon.
