I've definitely felt this shift too. My last internal application was met with a lot of hoops to jump through, more so than my previous ones. My manager also seemed hesitant to sign off, which was surprising. It makes you wonder if they're genuinely trying to save costs or if there's a restructuring happening behind the scenes that they aren't communicating. It's frustrating when you've invested years in a company and suddenly feel like an outsider trying to move up. Keep pushing, though. Maybe try to get more direct feedback on why your applications aren't succeeding.
That's interesting you're seeing that. My experience has been the opposite; my manager actively encouraged me to apply for an internal role recently and even helped me prep. HR was very transparent about the process. Could it be department-specific? Or maybe the types of roles you're targeting are highly specialized and they're struggling to find candidates with the exact skill set internally? It might be worth having a frank conversation with your manager about their reasoning and seeing if there are specific areas you can develop to make yourself a stronger internal candidate. Sometimes it's just about positioning yourself better.
