Quiet hiring freeze in my division?

Is anyone else seeing complete radio silence on backfills? My manager was pushing for a headcount request for months to cover the workload in our unit, and suddenly they’ve stopped mentioning it entirely. The word from the top is just 'do more with less' and 'operational efficiency,' which we all know is corporate speak for 'don't expect any help.' It feels like leadership is prepping the books to look lean for the next quarterly call. If they aren't replacing the people who left in Q3, I have to imagine the next logical step is a trimming of the people currently sitting in those chairs. Is this just us, or are other departments seeing this headcount starvation?

Same situation here. We’ve had three senior devs leave since September and HR won’t even open the job requisitions. It’s definitely a silent freeze across the board. Management is definitely prioritizing the balance sheet over team capacity before the end of the year. My lead keeps telling us to focus on the 'top three priorities' while we’re drowning, but the workload has easily doubled. Start polishing your resume now, because this is usually the calm before the layoff storm.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for those backfills. We went through this same exact cycle last year—a sudden 'optimization' push followed by a massive restructuring announcement two months later. If they’ve stopped talking about the headcount requests, it’s not because they forgot; it’s because leadership has been instructed to keep the budget tight to boost margins for the upcoming quarterly reports. Just keep your head down, do the bare minimum required to stay off the radar, and keep your exit options open.
