Are 'essential' roles really safe right now?

Been seeing a lot of talk about downsizing, and honestly, I'm starting to get a knot in my stomach. My role feels pretty critical to day-to-day operations, and I always assumed that meant some level of job security. But with the way things are trending in the industry, and even just general economic uncertainty, I'm wondering if 'essential' is even a thing anymore. Has anyone seen or heard of roles that were previously considered vital being impacted? Trying to get a realistic picture here, not just hype. Is it more about budget cuts across the board, or are they actively targeting specific functions? Curious what others are observing or hearing from their teams.

I'm in a similar boat at Air Products. My team is absolutely crucial for keeping the plants running, and we've always felt like the bedrock. But you're right, the economic news lately has been unsettling. I haven't seen any direct cuts to 'essential' roles here yet, but there's definitely a sense of unease. Management's been a bit quieter than usual, which is also a bit concerning. We're all just trying to keep our heads down and do the work, hoping our 'essential' status holds up if things get rough.

Honestly, I think 'essential' is largely a term companies use to make people feel better. At the end of the day, if the financials are bad enough, *everyone* is on the chopping block. I've seen it happen. At Air Products, we're seeing some belt-tightening, but it's more around discretionary spending and hiring freezes for now. Focus on being indispensable in tangible ways – be the person who solves problems others can't, or who has knowledge no one else does. That's the real security.
