Recruiting vs. Engineering: The internal divide

It’s getting pretty awkward in the Slack channels lately. We’re losing a significant chunk of our recruiting staff—again—but then I see open reqs for senior roles being blasted on LinkedIn every single day. The hypocrisy is starting to get hard to ignore. Management keeps talking about 'optimizing for the future,' but it really just feels like we’re burning through institutional knowledge to make the margins look slightly better for the next earnings call. The two-tier workforce issue is glaring at this point; if you’re not in a core product seat, you’re basically just waiting for your name to be on the next WARN notice. I’ve been here for three years and I don’t think I’ve seen morale this low since the big post-pandemic cuts. Is anyone actually still optimistic about the roadmap, or are we all just waiting for our RSUs to vest so we can jump ship to somewhere more stable? I’m exhausted.

It is honestly exhausting to watch. They keep pushing these aggressive growth targets while simultaneously gutting the very people responsible for building the team. You can't scale a high-performance engineering culture if the infrastructure behind the scenes is constantly collapsing. At this point, the 'optimization' strategy just feels like a fancy way of saying we are bleeding talent to satisfy shareholders. It is creating a toxic atmosphere where nobody feels secure enough to actually focus on their long-term projects.

I've seen this cycle repeat itself enough times to know it never ends well. Leadership is obsessed with those quarterly margins, but they are completely ignoring the massive overhead cost of constant turnover and retraining. When you treat recruiters like a disposable resource, you lose all that historical context and candidate trust, which makes filling those senior engineering roles infinitely harder. Everyone in the channels sees right through the corporate messaging, and it is killing morale across the board.
