The 'Selective Hiring' narrative is getting old

I’ve been reading the internal comms about our 'focused growth' strategy, and I have to call BS. How do you justify letting go of over a hundred people while simultaneously opening reqs for new roles in different pods? It feels like they're just swapping out talent to reset compensation packages or shift the headcount balance sheet. I’ve survived the last two rounds, but the imposter syndrome is real. Every time an announcement drops, I feel guilty for being here, but also terrified that I’m next. The disconnect between leadership’s 'we’re building for the future' messaging and the reality of seeing coworkers walked out is staggering. Is anyone actually buying the 'strategic realignment' line anymore? It feels like we are just a line item on a spreadsheet to them, not people. I’m starting to look at other options in travel tech because the instability here is making it impossible to focus on actual engineering work.

It is honestly exhausting to watch them pivot the headcount like a game of musical chairs. You hit the nail on the head regarding the compensation resets. It’s a common corporate tactic to trim the legacy salaries under the guise of 'rebalancing the pods,' but it’s cruel to the people who helped build this place. Don't let the imposter syndrome win; you were hired for a reason. Just keep your resume updated and stay alert, because this isn't about skill or contribution anymore—it’s just raw math for the quarterly earnings report.

I've been in the same boat, waiting for the other shoe to drop every time a meeting invite pops up. It’s hard not to feel guilty when colleagues you’ve worked with for years are suddenly cut while the company pretends it’s a necessary strategy for growth. You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way. Management calls it 'strategic alignment,' but it feels like a total lack of transparency. Focus on your own growth and keep your network active, because loyalty clearly isn't a two-way street here. Just keep your head down and survive the noise.
