Are we being 'restructured' by stealth?

I’ve been watching the internal org charts for the past few weeks, and it’s weird. People are leaving, and instead of backfilling roles, the responsibilities are just being dumped onto the remaining team members with a 'thanks for being a team player' email. It’s the classic death by a thousand cuts. There isn't an official announcement, but the workload is becoming unsustainable for everyone left. It feels like they are managing the attrition rate so they don't have to announce a formal RIF and deal with the PR hit. If your team is down a person and management says they are 'reevaluating the necessity' of that position, you know exactly what that means. Don't let them convince you that this is just 'agility'. It’s an exit strategy disguised as a pivot. Stay sharp.

It’s not just you. I’ve noticed the exact same pattern in my department. They are absolutely using attrition to bypass the PR nightmare of a formal layoff. By not backfilling positions, they get to quietly trim the headcount while keeping the remaining employees in a state of constant, unsustainable panic. It’s a cynical way to 'optimize' the balance sheet without having to pay severance or deal with the fallout of a public announcement. Keep your resume updated, because this slow-motion restructuring rarely ends with things getting easier for those of us still holding the bag.

I’ve been seeing this trend across several divisions lately, and it’s honestly exhausting. Management loves the 'team player' rhetoric because it guilt-trips us into absorbing three people's worth of work for the same salary. They aren't going to announce a RIF because they don't have to; they’re just waiting for the workload to break the rest of us so we either burn out or quit on our own. It’s a calculated strategy to shrink the workforce under the radar while maintaining a facade of stability. Don't fall for the 'we're all in this together' messaging while your personal bandwidth vanishes.
