Vendor contract renewals being pulled back?

Has anyone else noticed the sudden shift in how we're handling external contractors? I’m in one of the ops groups, and we just got word that all non-essential vendor renewals are being held for 'further review' by finance. It feels like they are trying to strip the balance sheet down to the studs before the end of the fiscal year. We’ve seen this playbook before—it’s usually the precursor to 'optimizing the workforce' once the books are tightened. The vibes in the office are off, and nobody is giving us a straight answer about whether this is just temporary belt-tightening or if the writing is on the wall for internal headcount. If you’re a contractor, start looking now. I’ve started polishing my resume just in case, because I don't trust that the silence from the top is business as usual.

We are seeing the exact same thing in my department. It feels like finance is playing a game of chicken with our operational capacity. The directive to pause non-essential renewals usually signals that they are looking to trim the fat before the quarterly earnings call. It is definitely creating a lot of anxiety across the floor, especially with how quiet management has been about the long-term outlook. Everyone is just waiting for the other shoe to drop at this point.
