Anyone else seeing the backfill freeze?

Just checking to see if this is happening everywhere or just in my department. We’ve had two people leave in the last month, and both roles were quietly taken down from the internal portal. Usually, these positions would be backfilled within a few weeks, but now they’re talking about 'redistributing the workload' across the remaining team. It’s the classic strategy, right? Overload the existing people until they burn out, then use that as an excuse to trim headcount later or push the work to contractors. It’s starting to feel like they are intentionally keeping the headcount lean to make the balance sheet look cleaner for the next quarterly report. I’ve reached out to a buddy in a different division, and he said they’ve stopped all travel approvals and are cutting the discretionary spend for training. If we aren't prepping for a reduction, then this is the most aggressive austerity drive I’ve seen in my time here. Trying to decide if it’s time to start polishing the resume or if I’m just being paranoid. Any insights from other locations?

It’s definitely not just your department. I’ve noticed the exact same pattern in my branch over the last quarter. Management stopped mentioning backfills altogether and just started calling it 'operational efficiency.' It feels like they are waiting for more people to quit voluntarily so they don't have to deal with the optics of formal layoffs. The workload is becoming unmanageable for the few of us left behind, and morale is hitting an all-time low because we know there is zero support coming from above. Good luck holding the line.
