Anyone else noticing the travel budget getting gutted?

Is anyone else seeing a massive shift in T&E policy over the last three weeks? I was told my offsite for next quarter is officially dead, even though it was already approved in the annual budget. My manager tried to play it off as 'fiscal responsibility,' but the tone in the email was pretty cold. We’ve seen this pattern before—the freeze usually precedes a structural announcement. It feels like they’re trying to inflate the numbers for the next earnings call by slashing every operational expense possible. I’m starting to wonder if the rumors about a Q3 headcount reduction have more teeth than I initially thought. People in my group are already updating their resumes just in case, which is creating a pretty toxic feedback loop of stress. Is it just my department, or is everyone else getting hit with these travel and contractor freezes too?

I’ve been tracking the internal chatter and it’s definitely looking like a repeat of the 2019 tightening. When they start clawing back already-approved travel budgets, it’s rarely just about 'fiscal responsibility'—it’s about optics for the upcoming quarter. If you’re seeing the freeze hit your department this hard, I wouldn't hold my breath for those offsites to be reinstated. Keep your head down and start looking at what projects are being prioritized over the others, as that usually tells you where the real ax is going to fall next.

Honestly, take the hint and stop planning anything for the rest of the year. Every time leadership rolls out this ‘new fiscal discipline’ talk, it’s a precursor to a wider restructuring. It’s annoying, but it’s the standard playbook here. They’re stripping out every bit of fat to make the balance sheet look pristine before the shareholders get an earful. If your manager is being cold about it, they probably already know more than they’re letting on. Stay cautious and keep your resume updated just in case the winds shift further.
