Feeling the pressure to do more with less

It’s getting absurd. We’ve had three people leave in the last two months and zero movement on backfills. Management keeps saying we’re 'revisiting priorities' and 'streamlining our focus,' which is corporate speak for 'do the work of two people for the same salary.' I’m honestly exhausted. If they’re planning to gut the team, I wish they’d just rip the bandage off instead of making us drown in the workload while we wait for a potential severance package. Is anyone actually seeing new hires, or is the freeze as total as it seems across the board? Seems like the strategy is just to push people to resign so they don't have to pay unemployment or severance.

The ‘revisiting priorities’ line is practically the corporate anthem lately. Honestly, don't hold your breath for those backfills. It seems like the strategy is to see how much they can squeeze out of the remaining headcount before the system breaks. I’ve seen this cycle before, and it rarely ends with a lightened workload. If you’re already feeling the burnout, it might be time to stop going above and beyond. Start doing exactly what is in your job description and nothing more. Protect your own mental health first, because the company certainly isn’t prioritizing it right now.

It’s definitely not just your team. The culture shift feels palpable lately, and the silence from leadership regarding headcount is intentional. They are leaning into attrition to lower costs without the optics of mass layoffs. It’s a miserable way to run a ship, but it keeps the numbers looking artificially clean for the quarterly reports. If you're waiting for them to 'rip the bandage off,' you might be waiting a long time. They want you to quit on your own so they don't have to pay severance. Document everything and look for an exit strategy while you still have the energy.
