The consultant presence is the biggest red flag. Every time they start pacing the halls with their clipboards and looking at everyone’s badges, a headcount reduction isn't far behind. My manager has been pulling the same disappearing act, and the lack of clarity on Q4 deliverables is classic pre-layoff behavior. Keep your head down, update your resume this weekend, and start archiving any documentation you might need for your next role. It's better to be paranoid and prepared than blindsided by a calendar invite for an 'urgent sync' on a Friday afternoon.
I’m choosing to be a bit more optimistic. 'Operational efficiency' is just the flavor of the month for leadership to look productive to shareholders, especially after the latest earnings report. Every company goes through these 'streamlining' phases where middle management gets twitchy and vague, but it doesn't always lead to a massive purge. Sometimes the consultants are just there to justify the next round of budget cuts rather than outright job losses. Just do your work, avoid the office drama, and wait for the quarterly announcements to actually clarify the direction.
