Anyone else seeing the backfill freeze?

It’s not just the 161 people in NJ. I’ve been monitoring the open reqs in our department and it’s like a ghost town. Even when someone leaves voluntarily, the role just vanishes from the portal. It’s obviously a soft hiring freeze, but management won’t admit it. They keep gaslighting us, saying we’re 'prioritizing strategic initiatives,' but we’re just running a skeleton crew at this point. I have three different product roadmaps on my plate and zero support to execute them. If this is what they mean by 'optimization,' I’d hate to see what actual failure looks like. I’m starting to prep my resume because I’d rather jump ship now than wait for the next surprise meeting in June. Anyone else seeing roles being pulled mid-interview process? Seems like they’re just burning the candle at both ends until the next quarterly update.

It is honestly exhausting watching leadership play this game. We are all seeing the same thing—open requisitions disappearing into thin air without a word. They talk about 'strategic alignment' while we are drowning in workload. If they would just be transparent about the budget constraints instead of pretending everything is fine, morale might actually recover a little bit. Keeping us in the dark while we pull double duty is a recipe for total burnout.

I’ve stopped looking at the internal portal altogether. Why bother? We all know the drill by now: someone quits, the job posting goes live for forty-eight hours, and then poof—it’s gone. It is a classic soft freeze disguised as efficiency. At this point, I am just doing what I can during my nine-to-five and logging off. If they want us to execute on those massive roadmaps, they need to actually resource the teams. Until then, the skeleton crew strategy is just setting us up to fail.
