Is the culture dying or just evolving?

I’ve been at Amex for five years, and the atmosphere has shifted drastically in the last six months. It used to feel like a stable, legacy institution where if you did your work, you were safe. Now, every single quarterly meeting feels like a guessing game about who is on the chopping block next. The recent Columbus news feels like just the tip of the iceberg. I’m tired of the 'reimagining the future' jargon when all it really translates to is fewer people doing the work of two departments. Is anyone else looking to jump ship before the next round? I’m genuinely considering taking my skills to a smaller fintech firm where I won’t wake up every Tuesday wondering if my badge will stop working.

It is definitely evolving into a typical soulless corporate machine. The days of feeling secure because you put in the hours are long gone. Management seems to have traded that institutional stability for a frantic obsession with efficiency and optics. When they start using buzzwords like 'reimagining' or 'streamlining,' it is almost always a signal to update your resume and look for the exit before the next round of cuts hits your floor. You are not just imagining the shift; the environment has become purely transactional.

I have been here even longer than you, and the shift is palpable. Honestly, I think the culture died years ago; it just took the recent instability to make the rot visible to everyone. The focus has moved entirely toward appeasing shareholders at the expense of the people who actually keep the systems running. It is no longer about quality or legacy; it is about cutting costs until the bone shows. If you are feeling burnt out, just know that you are not alone in noticing how much heavier the workload has become.
