I’m seeing the exact same thing in my department. It feels like a silent freeze where they just wait for the headcount to bleed out naturally. Nobody is saying the words 'hiring freeze' out loud in the meetings, but the empty desks and the increased workload tell the real story. Leadership is clearly prioritizing margin protection over capacity right now, and it’s hitting morale hard. I wouldn't expect any new headcount until at least the next fiscal cycle, if then.
Honestly, the lack of communication is what makes it so frustrating. We all know the macro environment is tough, and the tower business isn't immune to those headwinds. If they just came out and announced a formal freeze, at least we’d know where we stand instead of playing this guessing game with our reqs. My manager keeps saying they are 'evaluating the priority' of backfills, but it’s been months. It’s exhausting trying to keep up with the same goals while the team continues to shrink.
