Hiring freeze rumors heating up again

I’ve been hearing from a few friends in recruiting that our open reqs are being pulled from the portal one by one, even for backfills. Whenever HR starts quietly scrubbing the external site without an official announcement, it usually precedes a broader restructuring. I asked my manager about the team’s growth budget for next year, and they completely dodged the question. That’s never a good sign. If you’re currently in the middle of a promo cycle or pending equity grant, stay alert. I’ve seen this script play out before at other software firms—first the freeze, then the 'performance optimization' email arrives a few weeks later. Start tightening up your portfolios and refreshing your contacts just in case.

I’ve noticed the same thing with the internal job board. Roles that were slated for backfill have vanished overnight without any clear explanation. It’s frustrating when leadership treats us like we aren't part of the conversation, especially when we’re the ones doing the actual engineering work. If they are tightening the belt, I wish they’d just be transparent rather than leaving us to speculate about the next round of restructuring. Keep your resume updated just in case.

Honestly, the lack of communication is standard practice here at this point. I stopped expecting clear answers from management years ago. If you are sitting on an equity grant, I’d suggest planning for the worst and hoping for the best. Don't waste your energy worrying about the promo cycle; focus on documenting your projects so you have something to show if you decide to jump ship elsewhere. It’s just another cycle of uncertainty in a long line of them.
