Anyone else noticing the hiring freeze creeping into core roles?

Is it just my department, or is everyone seeing the 'pause' on backfilling roles? We’ve had two people leave in the last month—one retire and one jump ship to a competitor—and HR keeps saying the positions are 'under review.' Usually, we’d have a posting up within two weeks, but it’s been radio silence. My manager won't even look me in the eye when I ask about the team structure for next year. It feels like we're being nudged toward attrition to avoid the optics of an actual RIF. I’m starting to get that uneasy feeling that the 'streamlining' talk at the last town hall was just the prologue. If they aren't backfilling essential field ops or engineering spots, where is that headcount savings going? It’s hard to stay focused when you’re wondering if you’re next on the spreadsheet cut list.

It is definitely not just your department. I have seen the same thing happening across several engineering and operations teams lately. HR uses the 'under review' line as a convenient shield, but anyone who has been here long enough knows exactly what that implies. We are effectively being squeezed to do more with less while they keep the total headcount numbers artificially flat to avoid a messy public announcement. I started polishing my resume last week because the writing is clearly on the wall. Watch for the mid-year budget revisions; that is when the real plans usually surface.
