Performance reviews feeling more aggressive lately?

Just wrapped up my mid-year sync and the tone was completely different from last cycle. My manager, who is usually pretty chill, was hyper-focused on 'measurable impact' and strictly justifying my seat. It felt like they were looking for any reason to justify a poor rating rather than just checking in on progress. A few people on my team have mentioned the same thing. It feels like they are building a paper trail to make 'performance-based' exits easier if the board decides they need to trim headcount. I’ve been with Atmos for a decent stretch and I’ve never felt this level of micromanagement. I’m currently polishing my resume just in case, but curious if anyone else is getting the 'let's document everything' treatment recently. It’s hard to shake the feeling that the target is on our backs.

The shift in tone is definitely noticeable across the board. It feels like every conversation now revolves around quantifying tasks that used to be standard operations. I’ve heard similar rumblings from other departments about management creating documentation to support forced rankings. It’s definitely causing a lot of anxiety in the hallways, especially with how tight they’ve become about performance metrics lately. It’s hard not to feel like they’re just lining up the dominoes for a headcount reduction before the end of the fiscal year.

Honestly, keep your head down and start documenting every small win you have. If they are looking for a paper trail to push people out, the only way to protect yourself is to keep your own logs that contradict their 'measurable impact' narrative. It’s a classic move when upper management wants to cut costs without admitting to layoffs. Just make sure you aren't the one providing them with the ammunition they need. Stay professional, keep your metrics updated, and maybe keep an eye on external opportunities just in case.
