Is the corporate office going through silent layoffs?

I work in a support role at the SSC and the office feels like a graveyard lately. Over the past month, I’ve noticed a few desks in my department sitting empty with zero explanation from management. Usually, when someone moves on, we get an internal blast or a quick goodbye email, but these people just… vanished. When I asked my lead about it, I got the classic 'don't worry about it, just focus on your deliverables' response. It’s hard to stay focused when the culture is shifting toward complete silence. I’ve heard rumors of middle management getting squeezed to streamline reporting lines, but there hasn't been a peep on the official internal channels. Has anyone else at the SSC noticed the same thing, or am I just being paranoid? I’m seriously considering polishing up my resume because this lack of transparency is giving me major anxiety. It feels like we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, and honestly, the uncertainty is worse than just knowing what the plan is.

Same thing happened at my branch last year. It’s the classic corporate playbook: silence them out the door to avoid the rumors, even though everyone already knows what’s going on. The 'focus on your deliverables' line is just a stalling tactic because they don't have a plan yet. Start updating your resume now, because when they start doing it in waves without any internal communication, nobody is truly safe. It’s not just a graveyard, it’s a red flag.

I’ve been around long enough to know that when management starts stonewalling, it’s already too late. At my location, we saw the same pattern before the last restructuring. If they aren't acknowledging the departures, they’re likely trying to manage the narrative before the next quarterly report drops. Don't waste your energy trying to get straight answers from leadership; they’re just reading from a script. Look out for yourself first and keep your options open while the ship is still afloat.
