I’ve been seeing the exact same thing in my branch. The obsession with granular task tracking is a major red flag that usually precedes a round of layoffs. It doesn't feel like standard Q4 belt-tightening this time; it feels like they are mapping out who is actually essential and who is just a number. If they’ve stopped doing 1:1s, your manager likely already knows the headcount reduction plan and is being told to stay quiet. Update your resume now and start quietly archiving any proof of your recent performance just in case.
Honestly, don't overthink it. Every single year around this time, management gets paranoid about end-of-year bonuses and shareholder reports. The 'resource optimization' talk is just corporate speak for trying to look efficient for the board. Unless you’re in a role that’s clearly been stagnant for months, you’re probably just dealing with a manager who is feeling the heat from above. Just keep your head down, fill out the tracking sheets they want, and ride out the next month. It’s usually just noise until the holidays are over.
