Cloud migration is just code for headcount reduction

It’s funny reading the press releases about us saving $2B a year by building our own cloud infrastructure. Moynihan loves to brag about these 'efficiency gains' to the shareholders, but nobody ever talks about the human cost behind these initiatives. Every time we optimize a process or migrate to a new internal stack, the immediate goal isn't just better tech—it’s always about how many 'redundant' roles we can delete from the org chart. I’ve been here long enough to see the pattern. First, they push the 'innovative' tech stack, then the middle managers start sweating because their team sizes don't fit the new automation metrics, and then the inevitable batch of WARN notices hits. It’s hard to stay motivated when the tech stack you’re building is effectively sharpening the axe that’s coming for your department next year. Are we actually innovating, or are we just busy-working ourselves into a smaller headcount?

The irony is that they call it 'modernization,' but it’s really just a systematic gutting of the institutional knowledge that actually keeps the systems running. They replace experienced staff with expensive consultants who leave a mess behind, only to automate the remaining tasks into oblivion. It is not about efficiency; it is a game of shifting numbers on a balance sheet to appease Wall Street while the actual operations slowly hollow out from the inside. We are just cost centers to them, not people building the future.

You are spot on. Every time a new cloud mandate comes down from leadership, the morale drops because everyone knows what comes next. It is never about better latency or improved stability; it is about reaching that arbitrary headcount target by the next quarterly call. They make it look like tech innovation, but it is just a polite way to slash budgets and justify layoffs. If you are not part of a core team, you are basically waiting for the inevitable axe to fall once the migration project hits its next phase.
