Anyone else notice the sudden freeze on 'non-essential' travel?

Is anyone else seeing the travel freeze across the board? I work in merchandising and our director just told us that all in-person store visits and conferences are off the table indefinitely unless they are absolutely critical. It feels like they’re trying to scrub the P&L statement to make the margins look as bloated as possible before the next quarterly earnings call. Every time leadership starts talking about 'optimizing our travel spend' or 're-evaluating operational footprints,' it usually precedes a round of cuts. My team is already stretched thin after the last restructure, and the silence from HR is deafening. If they’re cutting travel, they’re definitely worried about cash flow. Has anyone heard whispers from anyone in finance or planning about a potential headcount reduction for Q3? I don't want to be blindsided if they decide to trim the fat again.

That tracks perfectly with what we’re hearing on the floor. It feels like they are squeezing every cent out of the store operations budget to pad the numbers for the investors. It’s impossible to manage merchandising standards and floor sets effectively when you aren't allowed to actually see the stores or communicate with the teams in person. It’s pretty clear they’re prioritizing a short-term boost in profit margins over long-term stability or actual brand quality.

I’m seeing the same thing, and honestly, it’s not surprising given the recent direction. Management is terrified of the upcoming earnings call, so they’re slashing every variable cost they can get their hands on. While they frame it as 'optimizing spend,' everyone knows it’s just a desperate attempt to make the balance sheet look healthier than it really is. It’s frustrating because it leaves the field teams completely unsupported while the higher-ups chase arbitrary margin targets.
