Anyone else seeing zero budget for temp/contractors?

I’ve noticed that all our contract renewals have been put on an indefinite hold. My manager won't give a straight answer, just keeps saying 'budget freezes' and 're-evaluating priorities.' We’re severely understaffed as it is, and now they’re cutting off the support we actually need to get through the holiday prep. It feels like they’re gutting the support layers first. I’ve been through a re-org at a previous retail company, and this feels exactly like the calm before the storm. No one is saying the word 'layoff,' but the hiring freeze combined with the sudden obsession with tracking every single minute of productivity is definitely making me nervous. If you’re a contractor, start looking now. If you’re full-time, start saving your liquid assets. I don't trust the narrative they're feeding us right now.

Same here. My department is currently drowning because all the contractors who handled our seasonal data migration were let go last week without notice. Management keeps pushing the 're-evaluating priorities' line, but it’s obvious they’re just trying to balance the books before the end of the quarter. It’s incredibly frustrating because we’re the ones who have to pick up the slack while they sit in meetings talking about 'efficiency.' Honestly, I'm already polishing my resume because this feels like the beginning of a much larger series of layoffs.

I wouldn't hold your breath for any answers from leadership right now. They usually keep the official messaging vague until the absolute last second to avoid panic or productivity drops. I’ve seen this cycle at B&BW before; they squeeze the operations teams and cut support to make the P&L look better for the stakeholders, regardless of the impact on the ground floor. If your contractors aren't getting renewed, it’s a clear signal that the company is prioritizing cost-cutting over operational stability. Definitely time to start looking elsewhere.
