I am so sorry to hear this. Dealing with a layoff is incredibly stressful, especially when it happens so abruptly without any prior warning. It feels like these companies have completely lost the human element in their decision-making processes. If you are reading this and were affected, please take a moment to breathe and prioritize your well-being before jumping straight into the job hunt. Definitely reach out to your network as soon as you can—you would be surprised how many people are willing to offer referrals or just lend a listening ear during transitions like this.
The corporate strategy here seems to be the same old playbook: slash headcount to satisfy stakeholders while leaving the actual teams scrambling to fill the gaps. Losing 32 people in Milwaukee might seem like a small number on a balance sheet, but those are real lives and careers being disrupted. It is a harsh reality of working in this industry right now. For everyone still there, keep your head on a swivel and make sure you are documenting your accomplishments. It is unfortunate, but it is clear that loyalty to the company is never reciprocated when the budgets tighten.
