Wow, Block laid off over 4,000 people. That's almost half the company. Seeing this happen in the fintech space is concerning. We're constantly told these companies are the future, revolutionizing finance, but then they pull the rug out from under thousands of employees. The justification feels so hollow. 'Advancements' – we all know what that usually means. It feels like a cyclical thing in tech now. Hire a ton, burn through cash, then massive layoffs when growth slows or costs need trimming. I'm not at Block, but I'm in the industry and it makes me nervous. What does this mean for job security in fintech long-term? Are we just going to keep seeing these massive shakeups every few years? Feels like the promise of stability in tech is fading fast.

This seems to be a recurring theme in the tech and fintech world lately. Aggressive hiring followed by significant workforce reductions when the market shifts or profitability targets become a concern. The 'advancements' justification often feels like a convenient way to reframe what amounts to cost-cutting. It leaves employees and observers wondering about the long-term stability and true growth strategies of these so-called revolutionary companies. It's a tough environment for those working in the sector, and certainly raises questions about the sustainability of the current growth models.
