Worst timing for potential layoffs... Anyone else stressing?

Seriously, what is going on? I've been with BSC for 7 years, and I'm in a role that feels pretty critical, but the rumors are really starting to get to me. I just bought a house last year, and my spouse's job isn't exactly stable either. If layoffs hit, and especially if the severance isn't great, we're in a really tough spot. My manager gave me a vaguely positive performance review, but then the VP mentioned 'strategic realignment' in a recent town hall, which just sounds like corporate speak for 'heads are gonna roll.' I'm trying to update my resume and brush up on interview skills, but honestly, the thought of starting over right now is just overwhelming. Anyone else feeling this pressure acutely? What are people doing to prepare, or are we just supposed to wait and see?

I hear you. It's incredibly stressful when rumors start flying, especially with significant life events like buying a house. 'Strategic realignment' can definitely feel like a veiled threat, no matter how positive your review. Try to focus on what you can control – keep doing excellent work and maybe subtly document your contributions. Also, if you have any emergency savings, now might be a good time to review that. Sending good vibes your way that these rumors are just noise.

Honestly, 'strategic realignment' is corporate speak for *something* is changing, and it rarely means good things for headcount. I've seen it before at other companies. The fact that your VP felt the need to mention it, even vaguely, is concerning. I'd start polishing up that resume just in case, and definitely look into what your current benefits package offers in terms of severance, if anything. Better to be prepared for the worst, right?
