It is definitely becoming the industry standard to use return-to-office mandates as a soft layoff strategy. By forcing people back into the office full-time, they bank on the fact that those with long commutes or family obligations will quit voluntarily, which saves the company the trouble of severance and public filings. It is a cynical way to 'optimize' headcount under the guise of collaboration. Stay vigilant and start updating your resume now, because the writing is on the wall for any office that isn't considered a core hub.
I have been feeling the same shift lately. It used to feel like Cadence actually cared about retaining talent, but these 'efficiency' talks are just code for trimming costs in the least transparent way possible. Watching the news out of Hagerstown makes it clear that nowhere is safe regardless of performance. The office mandates are absolutely a pressure tactic meant to thin the herd before the next fiscal quarter. Don't fall for the culture talk; look out for yourself and your own career trajectory before they make the choice for you.
