Just saw the WARN notice for the St. Charles location as of July 16th. 40 heads gone. For those of you who weren't aware, it’s officially public record now. It’s not a huge number compared to the thousands they cut back in the spring, but it’s still 40 lives upended in the middle of a Tuesday. No one saw this coming for this specific unit. I’ve been hearing whispers that the consolidation of the Discover ops is going to keep hitting these smaller hubs. If you are sitting in a satellite office, keep your head on a swivel. Don't trust the 'we have no further plans for reductions' email they sent out last quarter. We all know how that script goes. If you were one of the 40, check your severance package carefully and make sure you’re getting what you’re owed. Seriously, don’t sign anything immediately without having someone look it over. Stay safe out there, everyone. The banking sector is a meat grinder right now and Capital One is definitely doing their part to keep the churn going.

I’ve been tracking these filings for a while, and honestly, the St. Charles news isn't surprising if you’ve been watching how they're handling the integration. Every time they talk about 'synergies' or 'streamlining,' it’s code for cutting the overhead in these smaller satellite offices. It sucks for the 40 people involved, but at this point, if your role isn't essential to the core infrastructure at headquarters, you're just a line item on a spreadsheet. Stay sharp and keep your resumes updated, because this consolidation isn't anywhere near finished yet.

Man, this is brutal. I know 40 people doesn't sound like a 'massive' layoff compared to the quarterly bloodbaths, but for the individuals in that office, it's everything. I feel for those folks getting caught in the middle of a Tuesday. It really reinforces the idea that there is no such thing as job security in this sector anymore. Whatever loyalty people think they owe to the company, just remember that the company is only looking at their bottom line. Look out for yourselves and keep those doors open elsewhere.
