The Montgomery situation is just the latest chapter in the same old story. It’s draining to see colleagues pushed out while leadership talks about efficiency. We all know that 'streamlining' is just corporate code for cutting the bone, not the fat. I’ve been through three rounds of these reorgs in five years, and the silence from the top is deafening. If your manager says you're safe, take it with a massive grain of salt. Update your resume now and start networking before the calendar invites hit. It’s not about how hard you work anymore; it’s about whatever spreadsheet the consultants are looking at this week.
Hang in there. I’ve survived a few of these waves at CAT, and the best advice is to stay detached. The headcount reduction is predictable at this point, regardless of the 'operational excellence' branding they slap on it. Instead of waiting for the meeting invite, use this as the kick you need to see what else is out there. Plenty of shops are hiring experienced engineers who are tired of these quarterly churn cycles. You have to look out for yourself because the company hasn't looked out for the staff in a long time. Don't buy into the loyalty narrative when you're just a line item.
