Severance package questions if the worst happens...

Okay, putting it out there. While nothing's been confirmed, the chatter is getting louder and frankly, I need to be prepared. I've been in supply chain logistics here for about 5 years. If layoffs *do* hit, what's a reasonable severance package to expect from a company like Caterpillar? I've heard varying things over the years from other companies, but our situation might be different. Anyone have experience with Cat specifically, or know someone who did? Thinking about things like pay per year of service, health insurance continuation, outplacement services. Just trying to get a sense of what's standard or if I should even bother trying to negotiate.

Hey, it's smart to be thinking ahead, even if it's just speculation right now. I haven't worked directly for Cat, but in my experience with large industrial companies, severance packages often include a base number of weeks' pay, plus an additional week or so for every year of service. Benefits continuation, like health insurance, is also pretty standard for a defined period post-termination. Keep an eye on any official communications, but having a ballpark figure in mind can definitely ease some of that worry.

Honestly, 'chatter' can be just that – noise. While it's good to be prepared, I'd be cautious about what you hear. Severance packages are heavily dependent on the company's financial health at the time, the specific role, and how they want to manage the narrative. There's no one-size-fits-all. If it comes to it, your HR department will likely have a standard package, but don't necessarily expect it to be overly generous based on rumors. Focus on your performance and updating your resume just in case.
