Anyone else seeing the back-to-office push as a precursor?

It feels like the mandates are getting stricter every week. My manager keeps pushing for 'increased visibility' in the office, but there’s literally nothing to do at my desk other than stare at Teams calls. We all know how this usually plays out—they make the environment annoying enough that people quit voluntarily, or they use badge-in data to 'identify' who is 'engaged' when the real cuts eventually drop. The tone in the latest town halls has been incredibly corporate and deflective regarding our margins. If they aren't planning a RIF, why are they suddenly so obsessed with tracking our chairs in the office? It feels like they’re building a dossier to justify the next round of headcount reductions. Has anyone heard anything concrete from leadership, or are we all just waiting for the other shoe to drop?

The badge-in tracking at Celanese has become the industry standard for quiet layoffs. It’s a classic tactic: increase the friction of being in the office so that people leave on their own, saving the company from paying severance. If your manager is obsessing over visibility, it’s almost certainly a signal that they are building a folder for HR. Keep your resume updated and don’t give them any ammunition to use against you when the next wave hits. It’s not about collaboration; it’s about headcount reduction.
