Quiet office, high anxiety: Is the hammer about to drop?

The energy in the office has completely shifted over the last two weeks. It’s eerily quiet. Usually, there’s some chatter about projects or upcoming deadlines, but now everyone is just heads-down, keeping their LinkedIn profiles updated. I had a 1:1 yesterday and my manager seemed incredibly distracted, dodging direct questions about the Q4 roadmap. I know we aren't hearing official news, but the pattern is identical to previous years—stop hiring, freeze spending, minimize travel, and then announce a reduction in force shortly after. I’m honestly just waiting for the 'all-hands' calendar invite to pop up with no agenda. Does anyone know if the leadership team has been doing more travel than usual? I feel like they’re either out doing deal-making or prepping the layoff decks. It’s hard to focus when you’re constantly checking your email for a meeting invite that could ruin your month.

I’ve been through three of these cycles here already, and the silence is always the loudest signal. When management stops talking about the future roadmap and starts staring at their feet during 1:1s, you know the budget cuts are finalized. Update your resume and download your performance reviews while you still have system access. It’s better to be prepared and stay than to be caught off guard when the calendar invite for a 'mandatory department update' suddenly appears on a Tuesday morning. Trust your gut—the patterns are never a coincidence here.

Honestly, I wouldn't panic just yet, but definitely keep your options open. Every year there is this localized anxiety about Q4 that feels like the end of the world, and sometimes it really is just standard year-end fiscal tightening rather than a full-scale layoff. That said, the distraction from management is definitely concerning. If they are dodging questions about the roadmap, they either don't know what’s coming or they aren't allowed to say. Take a breath, keep your head down, and keep polishing the resume just in case.
