Management hiding behind 'reorganization' talk?

Had a 1:1 with my manager yesterday and when I asked about the quarterly headcount projections, the answer was the most vague corporate word salad I’ve heard in years. Lots of talk about 'optimizing resources' and 'aligning with future growth,' but nothing concrete. Every time we ask about budget stability, it’s like talking to a brick wall. It’s getting hard to stay motivated when you feel like your role is being phased out in real-time. I’ve noticed the G&A expenses are under a microscope, and travel/training approvals are basically non-existent right now. Has anyone heard anything concrete from leadership during the town halls, or are they still sticking to the script? It feels like we are being managed out through attrition rather than a mass layoff event. If you have been told your team is safe, consider yourself lucky. The rest of us are just playing a waiting game, keeping our resumes updated and checking LinkedIn every single hour.

The corporate speak is a massive red flag. When management starts leaning on phrases like 'optimizing resources' without providing any actual data or roadmap, it usually means the decision has already been made and they’re just waiting for the right PR window to announce layoffs. Trust your gut. If your role feels like it’s being phased out, it probably is. Start polishing your resume now and quietly network outside the company. There’s no point in waiting for the ax to fall when the writing is clearly on the wall.

I went through the exact same thing a few months ago before the last wave of cuts. My advice? Stop looking for clarity from your manager because they likely don't have it either, or they are specifically instructed to keep you in the dark to prevent a mass exodus before the quarter ends. Focus on documenting your wins and making sure you have your personal files saved elsewhere. It’s a sinking ship, and transparency is the first thing they toss overboard to keep the executive bonuses afloat.
