Is Schwab even trying to keep talent anymore?

I’ve been at Schwab for a while, but the vibe lately is just straight-up toxic. With these constant rounds of layoffs—now hitting Rantoul—it feels like they’re just burning through the workforce. I had a mentor tell me five years ago that this was a 'forever company,' but that feels like a bad joke now. Every single week there's a new rumor about another site being consolidated or a team getting 'restructured' into oblivion. It’s impossible to focus on actual projects when you’re constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if you’re next on the list. I’m already looking elsewhere, even if the market isn't exactly firing on all cylinders. I’d rather take a pay cut somewhere else than stay here and wait for the inevitable meeting with my manager and an HR rep. Is anyone staying, or is the exodus already fully underway in your departments?

I hear you. The 'forever company' narrative has completely eroded over the last few years. It used to be about long-term development and building a career, but now it feels like management only cares about hitting quarterly numbers at the expense of everyone on the ground. When you're constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if your office is next on the chopping block, it’s impossible to feel any loyalty. You aren't alone in feeling this way; morale is at an all-time low across the board.

Look, it’s just the nature of the industry right now. Schwab is focused on aggressive cost-cutting to keep shareholders happy, and unfortunately, that means sites are getting consolidated and teams are being thinned out. It’s definitely stressful, but focusing on what you can control is the only way to stay sane. If the environment is truly toxic, maybe it’s time to start looking at what else is out there. No company is worth your mental health, especially when they clearly don't prioritize their own people.
