Performance reviews feeling unusually harsh this year

Just finished my mid-year review and the criteria felt completely different from previous cycles. My manager was being extremely granular about metrics that weren't even on the table in Q1. It honestly felt like they were setting a baseline for potential 'underperformance' documentation. I’ve seen this pattern before at other firms right before a headcount reduction—they tighten the performance standards so they have a documented reason to let people go for cause rather than having to pay out severance. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it feels like the goalposts are being moved to make layoffs look like performance management. Curious if others are experiencing similar pressure or if my direct lead is just having a bad week. Keep your head on a swivel.

It is the oldest trick in the book. Whenever the management team starts moving the goalposts mid-year, it is almost always a sign that they are trying to manage headcount without calling it a layoff. Documentation is their primary shield against severance payouts. I’ve seen this exact cycle repeat itself in the insurance industry multiple times; keep your resume updated and start looking elsewhere immediately. Do not wait for them to finalize your paperwork before you decide to move on.

I’m in the same boat. The shift in expectations feels incredibly forced and totally disconnected from the goals we set back in January. My manager was suddenly obsessed with niche metrics that don’t even drive actual value. It definitely feels like they are building a paper trail to justify exits. Don't take it personally—this is standard corporate maneuvering when the higher-ups are looking to trim the budget. Focus on getting your documentation in order and protecting yourself.
