RTO policy tightening up - is it a lead-up to something else?

Is it just me, or is the sudden push for stricter RTO enforcement feeling like a precursor to a layoff? My manager just started tracking badge swipes again, which felt like a total non-issue for the past year. It feels like they are looking for reasons to justify performance issues or just push people to quit voluntarily so they don't have to pay out severance. It’s incredibly frustrating because my productivity hasn't dipped once, yet suddenly my physical presence at a desk is the most important KPI. It feels like a passive-aggressive way to thin the herd without having to announce a formal RIF. I’m tired of the constant goalpost moving. Does anyone else feel like they’re being managed out, or is this just the new standard operating procedure now? Honestly, the culture shift over the last six months has been night and day. I'm keeping my eyes open for other roles just in case this trend continues.

This is a classic corporate playbook. When leadership suddenly shifts focus from actual output to badge swipes, it is almost always a sign that they are cleaning house. They want to trim headcount without the legal and financial headache of a formal layoff, so they make the environment uncomfortable enough that people just walk away on their own. Start polishing your resume now, because the writing is on the wall.

I honestly think people are reading too much into this. Management just wants to see some return on the real estate investment. It’s annoying, sure, but jumping to the conclusion that a massive layoff is around the corner just adds unnecessary stress to your day. Just badge in, do your work, and don't give them a reason to flag you for policy violations. Most of the time, they just want to see butts in seats.
