I've noticed the exact same thing. My last two mileage reports were kicked back for 'insufficient detail' despite using the exact same format I've used for three years. It’s definitely not a coincidence that these audits are happening right as we’re hearing whispers about budget tightening. When leadership starts nitpicking lunch receipts, it’s rarely about the small change. It feels like they are building a case to justify a broader restructuring or to make the expense policy so restrictive that people stop filing altogether. Keep your head down and document everything; they are definitely looking for reasons to scrutinize the bottom line.
That’s standard procedure when the higher-ups want to inflate the quarterly margins. It’s frustrating, but I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it unless it starts affecting your base pay. They’ve been pushing this 'optimization' narrative across all departments lately, and T&E is usually the easiest place to artificially deflate operational costs before a big announcement. It’s annoying, sure, but don't take it personally. Just submit your reports exactly as they want them, even if you have to spend an extra hour formatting, and wait for the quarterly updates to see if this is just a temporary phase or a deeper shift.
