Anyone else seeing an uptick in "skill gap" conversations?

Lately, it feels like management has been talking a lot about "skill gaps" and "upskilling" in team meetings and company-wide comms. It's not just the usual annual training push either. This feels more pointed, like they're trying to identify who has what and perhaps who doesn't. Is this just standard corporate speak for needing new talent, or is anyone else getting the vibe that this might be a prelude to something else? Could they be framing it as performance-related to justify restructuring down the line? Doesn't feel like a hiring spree is happening, so it's making me wonder if they're looking internally at who needs to 'develop' or be 'realigned'. Curious if anyone else is hearing this theme and what they think it means.

Interesting observation. I've definitely heard similar talk circulating, especially within finance sectors like Citi. It does feel more strategic than just a routine training initiative. My take is that they're probably evaluating current capabilities against future business needs, and yes, it could be a precursor to identifying areas for restructuring or targeted hiring. It's wise to be attuned to these conversations.

Yeah, that resonates. At places like Citi, these 'skill gap' discussions often precede significant shifts. It's a way to reframe potential redundancies or reorganizations under the guise of necessary development. It's less about 'upskilling' everyone and more about identifying who fits the new mold or who might be phased out. Definitely keep your ears open and document everything.
